We’ve been waiting a while for the OnePlus 7 series to be released and now it is finally here. One this phone I appreciate some things. I appreciate the amount of Dolby and other easter egg effort that was put into the phone. Let’s look more into it
We’ve been waiting several months for the OnePlus 7 Pro to be released and now it is finally here to the public. I already have some suspicion with the price, the phone being $670 unlike other flagships in the phone series to where they are around $700 or maybe $1000 but there is always an easy explanation for this. The thing I find cool about the OnePlus 7 Pro off the bat is the water cooling and the Dolby vision screen when you are watching some form of media. It’s almost like a flagship smartphone that wants to be a PC if we haven’t seen that enough in previous flagships
The OnePlus 7 Pro has a design that reminds me of a Samsung Galaxy S7. I say this mainly because of the curved edges, like the screen edging off a little bit. I feel like this sort of contributes to the Dolby experience you get when viewing specific media. Speaking of this OnePlus 7 Pro does use Dolby Atmos speakers so it also adds to the idea of a portable movie theater in your hand.
Core Processor And GPU – Quality Of Media
As of today, I am still waiting for a new CPU to surpass Snapdragon 855 but I guess we will probably still not see that for another while. As this time OnePlus will use 855 as they have been using for the past since OnePlus 7. But the 855 still has its advancements like a 48MP single camera while having a 1.6 aperture which should create an average but still good enough shallow depth photo on the main camera
This phone uses an Adreno 640 GPU which is s specifically integrated into the Snapdragon 855 CPU. As of now the Adreno 640 is around six months old being released in December of 2018. The 640 uses 10 nm technology which doesn’t surprise me too much as of it being Dolby technology. This is especially if we take PC GPU’s with 7nm technology that is trending now.
Comparisons Of Specs
I noticed the Adreno 640 is no different from the Adreno 630 at least specification wise, both were released on December 2, 2018, they both use 10nm technology and use DirectX 12. How does Snapdragon 855 compare with using an Adreno 640 graphics card? The 855 uses 7nm so the Adreno 640 kind of carries it in this area and Snapdragon 855 uses CMOS technology which is also fairly useful knowing how low power integrated circuits work, it would need more of it for better for static RAM, which can be good for Dolby watch time. This theory of mine may be wrong but cool to think about nonetheless
The Three Cameras And Popup Front Face
The two sidebar lenses or more similar in common than the main camera it’s self. The telephoto lens is just a slightly modified copy of the Ultra Wide Angle Lens. The telephoto lens has an f / 2.4 aperture while the Ultra Wide Angle Lens has an f / 2.2 aperture lens. So it kind of carries this element for our main camera having a pretty low aperture of f/1.6
Front Facing Camera
The front facing camera is one of the things even non OnePlus consumers are focusing on. I think they influenced this idea of the popup front-facing camera on the Huawei Matebook X Pro which you can put down for security reasons. The cool part about this is that the camera will close if it detects fall damage. OnePlus even claims because of this you could take 5 years worth of selfies, 150 selfies and not degrade the camera unit mainly because of this.
I wonder if we will see future flagship OnePlus smartphones where the three camera lenses will have equal or similar spec distribution. I don’t expect to see it for a while but it will just raise the total price to around $700. The ironic thing about the OnePlus 7 Pro some people tend to focus on is the 3x zoom. I personally don’t find it too interesting as there have been more recent flagships that use more than 3x zoom like the Samsung Galaxy S10 which uses 5x optical zoom, or the Huawei P30 Pro which literally uses 50x optical zoom. I’m not sure why it’s just a big thing OnePlus presents for the OnePlus 7 Pro
Zooming Options
For zooming, there are three modes I found you can use. Ultra-wide, wide angle, and telephoto. Wide angle, in my opinion, is the clearest which is why I like it the best, I like the Ultra wide angle as this has the biggest frame, almost big enough to be a panorama but not exactly. Ultra wide to be specific is 0.6x zoom mode. Telephoto is just straight up 3x. I like how you can have a 3x on a flagship smartphone but it has such a diverse range of options to use the zoom some probably wouldn’t even care about needing a higher zoom if you were to think like that
Sensors And OxygenOS
The OnePlus 7 Pro uses a fair amount of sensors to which all of them will be explained for where some people may question there use anyway. OnePlus 7 Pro uses the traditional touch center to login to the device just like what we’ve been seeing in recent Samsung flagship models. The most important sensor I found was the laser sensor, which is pretty good for distance in photos, I don’t focus on it too much on laser senses but it’s pretty cool to have as just something new.
OxygenOS is one of the most notable things with this phone. In a simplified sense, Oxygen mode is just for enhancing media and data. You have Zen Mode which sets a timer on your phone in certain times of the day when you can use your phone which is pretty handy to have built in already but anyone can just download a parental control app. Good for saving vision and data usage using an ancient method.
4000 mAH Battery
The phone uses a 4000 mAH battery that charges very quickly and lasts for a more than average long time. It is apparently 34% faster than the 6T flagship. So you’ll be handling some movies on this smartphone for a fairly long time. I can’t think of me watching movies on my phone in a while but I feel like I can get a much better nostalgic feeling from the Dolby features
Conclusion
The OnePlus 7 Pro at least, in my opinion, is a very movie integrated smartphone. I like the fact that you can use the cameras, at least the front-facing camera for 5 years and take 150 photos and do very little damage to the camera unit. I realized the CPU-GPU combination in comparison to other flagships is better than what I’ve seen in a while with other flagship phones recently. Overall I would rate this phone a 4.7 / 5 stars [star rating=”4.7″]
